The Ötztal Cycle Marathon 2024 in Austria, taking place on the 1st of September, is the most challenging cycling marathon in the Alps, offering a captivating mix of valley and high alpine terrain that creates a unique atmosphere. The course spans 227 kilometers from Sölden over four alpine passes - the Kühtaisattel, Brenner, Jaufenpass, and Timmelsjoch - into South Tyrol and back. Riders conquer an astonishing 5,500 meters of elevation gain. The event attracts over 4,000 participants who willingly take on this enormous physical and mental challenge. The fastest cyclists complete the marathon in approximately seven hours, demonstrating exceptional speed and determination.
The event features a diverse field including top favorites, sports legends and aspiring amateurs. Last year's winner, Manuel Senni of Italy, will face strong competition from Austria's Alban Lakata, who finished second last year, and Jonny Hoogerland, who finished third. On the women's side, last year's winner Janine Meyer of Germany and fellow German Catherine Rossmann are also among the favorites. Additionally, sports legends such as former ski racers Thomas Dreßen of Germany, who won the prestigious downhill race “Streif” in Kitzbühel in 2018, and Italians Manfred Mölgg and Werner Heel will be competing. Former Austrian biathlon star Dominik Landertinger will also be among the participants.
