Grueling length, harsh race conditions, and impressive athletic performances: triathlon has experienced a unique boom in recent years. Many consider it as the "king of all sports disciplines" as it requires so many different skills from the athletes. The best of them compete in the world's leading triathlon series, the famed Ironman Triathlon Series that culminates in the Ironman World Championship.
The Ironman Austria with its beautiful setting and perfect triathlon landscape attracts over 3000 athletes out of around 60 nations every year. Lake Wörthersee with its crystal clear water offers optimal swimming conditions. The start of this first discipline takes place in Strandbad Klagenfurt, the biggest lakeside resort in Europe. The biking portion leads through the heart of Carinthia while the running course is totally flat and passes Klagenfurt city with its landmark, the "Lindwurm".
